Plastic, Reconstructive and Cosmetic surgeon Associate Professor (A/Prof) Damian Marucci is an experienced practitioner of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery in Sydney. Whether it is the subtlety of facial plastic surgery, the technical complexity of reconstructive microsurgery, or the challenge of facial trauma and skin cancer, A/Prof Marucci does it all with care, precision, and attention to detail that has earned him his reputation for excellence.

A/Prof Damian Marucci is a registered specialist Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (MED0001167269) with over 15 years of experience. He has a long commitment to Plastic Surgery training and excellence. He convenes the popular monthly Plastic Surgery Journal Club, where plastic surgeons meet to discuss the latest research in the fields of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Cosmetic Surgery. A/Prof Marucci has also produced a number of patient education podcasts which are also available for free on Apple podcasts.

Damian Marucci is an Associate Professor of Surgery at one of Australia’s most prestigious institutions, the University of Sydney. The University of Sydney is currently ranked as being the 60st best university in the world, and its medical school is ranked 20th in the world.This is also where A/Prof Marucci completed his undergraduate degrees in Medicine, Surgery and Arts and later obtained his PhD in Surgery. A/Prof Marucci teaches medical students and junior doctors through his affiliation with the University of Sydney.

A/Prof Marucci’s main duties with the University involve teaching advanced surgical anatomy as part of the highly regarded Masters of Surgery program. A detailed knowledge of anatomy is a vital prerequisite for good surgery and good surgical outcomes. He also supervises Masters students and medical students interested in research.

There are very few Associate Professors in the field of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in Australia. A/Prof Marucci is on the Editorial Board of the influential medical journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Global Open. This means that he is always up to date with what constitutes the best in evidence-based practice in plastic surgery. A/Prof Marucci is the host of the popular “Keynotes” podcast, where he discusses the latest advances in plastic surgery with surgeons from around the world. A/Prof Marucci is a member of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the peak body for plastic surgeons in the country. He is currently on the Education Committee of ASPS and was a previous the Secretary for the NSW Chapter of the ASPS. A/Prof Marucci is also on the Board of the Australian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the peak body for plastic surgeons with an interest in Cosmetic Surgery.

Education and Training

A/Prof Marucci obtained degrees in Medicine, Surgery, and Arts from the University of Sydney. He is one of the few plastic surgeons with a Ph.D. in Surgery, which was awarded by the University of Sydney. He has developed and patented a range of minimally invasive surgical instruments that minimize tissue trauma and improve patient healing.

After completing his plastic surgery training in Sydney, A/Prof Marucci undertook a fellowship in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the world-renowned Oxford Plastic Surgery Unit in England. He then completed a specialist Craniofacial Surgery fellowship at the prestigious Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children in London. A/Prof Marucci was then awarded the Mentor International Aesthetic Surgery Fellowship in London, working with Mr. Barry Jones, one of the world’s best aesthetic plastic surgeons.

A/Prof Marucci returned to Sydney in late 2007 and has since been practicing alongside the esteemed Dr. Darrell Perkins.

Awards and Accolades

A/Prof Marucci has been well-recognized by a number of organizations. During his training, he was awarded the following distinctions:

  • Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Surgeon Scientist Scholarship
  • Young Investigator Award from the Surgical Research Society
  • Noel Newton Medal from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons
  • Excellence in Teaching Award from the University of Sydney
  • A number of awards for “Best Paper” and “Best Presentation” at various conferences

Upon completion of his training, A/Prof Marucci was awarded the Hugh Johnston travel grant from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, which he used to spend a year as a plastic surgery fellow in the Oxford Plastic Surgery Unit in the United Kingdom.

Current Work

A/Prof Marucci currently works in both the public and the private sectors. He has appointments at St. George Hospital, St. George Private Hospital, Aesthetic Day Surgery (where he is a Director), and the Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

He specializes in major reconstructive surgery after breast cancer, skin cancer, and head and neck cancer, as well as facial trauma. He also performs lower limb reconstruction after trauma.

Additionally, he performs a number of cosmetic surgeries to enhance people’s appearance, including breast augmentationbreast reductionabdominoplasty (tummy tuck)rhinoplasty, and face lift surgery.

Volunteer Work

A/Prof Marucci believes that it is important to give back. In addition to treating Australian patients for no charge in the public hospital system, he volunteers his time to go overseas every year. He has previously volunteered on surgical missions to war-torn countries with Medecins Sans Frontieres. He travels annually to Samoa with Interplast, where he predominately performs cleft lip and palate surgery on children born with these conditions. There are no plastic surgeons in Samoa. A/Prof Marucci has a been a member of Interplast’s “Team Samoa” since 2011, and it is the highlight of his year.

A/Prof Marucci currently holds prominent positions with a number of organizations, including:

As a widely respected plastic surgeon, A/Prof Marucci is also heavily involved with the training of future plastic surgeons and he runs regular teaching sessions for junior surgeons, which are highly regarded.
