It’s completely normal to be nervous before surgery.

I’ve been a 12F for 3 years now and am only 20. I’ve been put on the public system for surgery and an opening came up, this is something I’ve wanted for so long and now the opportunity has come and I’m all of a sudden nervous and not so sure. People around me are not on my side they’re telling me all these negative things and I read some of people’s experiences about scars and uneven nipples. Can I hear some reassurance?

Dear Brenna,
It is completely normal to be nervous before surgery. Rest assured that breast reduction surgery is the one of the most popular and appreciated procedures that plastic surgeons perform. Many patients comment that they wished they’d had the surgery years ago.
The thought of “scars on your chest” is always something that many patients baulk at – but the vertical scar below the nipple fades well in the months after the surgery and the scar around the areolar matures to look anatomically natural.
The risks of asymmetry are small (in terms the position, shape and size of the nipple – as well as the breast itself). Your surgeon will carefully plan your procedure to minimise these risks. Your surgeon takes accurate measurements to map your procedure with symmetry being the goal.
If you have questions, I suggest you get in contact with your surgeon again before the big day. See if your surgeon has any before/after photos on their website – or else look at some other surgeons’ websites to get an idea of what to expect.
