Does breast reduction surgery include a breast lift?

Breast reduction Sydney

For women with very large breasts, there can be a variety of medical issues. Back, neck, and shoulder pain, rashes under the breasts, and irritation by bra straps are all common in this population. Some women seek out breast reduction surgery in order to bring the breasts to a more manageable size and address these problems.

Women with very large breasts will generally also experience a greater degree of breast sagging over time. They may be interested in a breast lift, in order to address this issue. Women sometimes ask us if they can add a breast lift to their breast reduction. Can you have both of these procedures together?

Breast reduction includes breast lift

In fact, a breast lift is a standard part of a breast reduction procedure. Breast reduction includes not only the removal of excess glandular and fat tissue, but also excess skin. As part of the process, the remaining tissue is lifted, and the nipple is repositioned higher on the breast. There are various different techniques for performing the incisions and deciding which tissue to remove, but they all include lifting the remaining breast tissue.

If a breast reduction did not include a breast lift, then the removal of breast tissue would leave the breast with even more sagging than before the procedure. This is because the skin envelope would be further emptied out. Leaving excess skin while removing other types of tissue would not create the best result, both in terms of aesthetics and in terms of the patient’s comfort after the procedure.

The lifting aspect of breast reduction surgery is actually part of how it’s able to help solve problems like back and shoulder pain. A very large breast tends to sit low on the chest wall, and this pulls downward on the chest and can create a curvature or a “hunch” in the upper back. By lifting the breast, its center of gravity is brought upward, where the weight is easier for the body to bear. It’s widely believed that many of the benefits of breast reduction depend on the breast lift that is part of the procedure.
