The traditional facelift
The traditional facelift procedure is the most common. While it’s been performed in some fashion for decades, techniques have been continually improving, resulting in better and more natural-looking results for many patients.
For this option, the incision begins near the temple, in the hairline. It then curves down in front of the ear, around the earlobe, and ends behind the ear in the hairline. (The only part of the incision that could be visible is the part in front of the ear, but this is usually easy to hide with a bit of hair, even with a short hairstyle. This procedure primarily addresses the midface and the lower face, including smile lines, jowls, sagging, and “marionette lines” extending from the nose to the corners of the mouth. The surgeon addresses the underlying tissues as well as the skin itself; fat tissue can be reshaped or redistributed, and muscles may be tightened or reshaped. As a result, this procedure has the potential to create significant change in the appearance of the face. Those who are seeking the most dramatic change in their appearance may select this option.
The mini-facelift
Also known as a limited incision facelift, this procedure is less extensive than the traditional procedure. The scar begins just in front of the ear instead of extending upwards into the hairline of the temple. With this smaller incision, there is less ability for the surgeon to manipulate the tissues of the face, especially the midface. At the same time, there is generally less swelling and an easier recovery from the procedure.
If the patient’s concerns are primarily with the lower face, then this may be a good option. Younger patients who have only mild to moderate concerns with their appearance may also select the mini-facelift. The results will not be as dramatic as with a regular facelift, so it’s important to consider the tradeoffs.
The brow lift
Even the traditional facelift does not address the forehead and brows. For those who have concerns about sagging brows or significant wrinkling and laxity of the forehead, a procedure called a brow lift may be of interest. This can be performed along with the facelift; the incisions will extend farther upward into the hairline around the forehead. Some patients also choose to add additional procedures, such as eyelid surgery to address droopy eyelids. These can often be performed along with the facelift, so that you only have to plan for one recovery period.
