Finding What Works For You: Types of Breast Implants in Sydney

Opting for breast augmentation is a big decision that requires a number of decisions. Once the decision has been made, there are many questions that remain. What size of implant is best for your body? What surgical entry point is best for your needs? What type of implant works best for your body?

Searching the web for information can make the process seem daunting. There are many options of which to choose and without a knowledgeable guided hand you may not achieve the desired results. A/Prof Damian Marucci will use his years of experience to help you make the right decisions. During your initial consultation, Dr. Marucci will discuss your options for breast implants, including which type of breast implants in Sydney are right for you.

Breast implants come in many varieties. To achieve the most natural look, Dr. Marucci will discuss your options for your selection.

Saline or Silicone

implant_saline_siliconeLooking on the internet, you will see many sites and blog posts about whether saline or silicone are best. Although both implants are constructed of a silicone shell, saline and silicone implants vary based on their content. Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water (saline). The saline solution is natural to the body and should a leak occur, would be absorbed and expelled as waste. Silicone implants are filled with silicone gel that comes in liquid or a form-stable cohesive option. They offer a more realistic feeling of natural breasts compared to saline implants and are more commonly selected by patients.

Silicone breast implants have had a lot of bad press over the years, leading to a moratorium on their use in the 1990’s. The latest generation cohesive gel implants do not have the same complication risks as do earlier liquid silicone implants. Silicone implants can be made “form stable” – meaning they can be manufactured to be shaped like a breast (“anatomical” or “tear drop”). Saline implants are rarely used in Australia. They feel like a bag of water underneath the skin – because that is exactly what they are! If there is the smallest hole in the breast implant shell, all the saline will leak out very quickly. Cohesive gel silicone implants do not have the same problem. Also, saline implants cannot be “shaped” into anatomical or tear drop implants – they only come in round.

Round or Anatomical

Anatomical implants, often called teardrop implants because of their shape, are a more anatomically correct shape. These implants are often filled with cohesive gel silicone to help them maintain their shape.

Smooth or Texture

textured-and-saline-breast-implantThe silicone shell of implants is available in different surface consistencies. Patients have the option to choose between smooth or textured implants. Smooth implants are softer and move more naturally within the implant pocket. Alternatively, textured implants have a textured surface that allows internal tissue to adhere to the surface of the implant and have been shown to reduce the risk of a tight scar capsule. They are often recommended when implants are placed over the muscle, or subglandularly.

In addition to type of implants, size and positioning are important factors. A/Prof Damian Marucci will help you determine which methods are best for your individual needs and to obtain your desired results.
