Restore Your Confidence With Gynaecomastia Surgery in Sydney

With all of the media attention these days focused towards body positive imagery towards women, men often go forgotten. However, men often suffer from body image issues of their own. For men with oversised breasts, this is a particular problem. For these men, A/Prof Damian Marucci may recommend gynaecomastia surgery in Sydney.

What is gynaecomastia?

Gynaecomastia, sometimes informally referred to as “man boobs,” is a condition in which a man’s breasts become abnormally large. This condition is fairly common in newborn babies, pubescent males, and older men.

Gynaecomastia can be caused by a number of situations. In some men, there is a hormonal imbalance in the amount of testosterone and estrogen produced. Other men may experience the condition as a side effect to another condition, such as kidney failure, Klinefelter’s syndrome, thyroid disorders, or liver disease. Consumption of some medications or drugs such as marijuana and alcohol have also been found to cause enlarged breast tissue in men.

Gynaecomastia persists due to an excess of breast tissue. Because of this, exercise or losing weight will not help the situation. Men may find they have gynaecomastia if the breast glad tissue swells or the breast becomes tender to the touch. In some cases, the sise of the areola increases as well.

Gynaecomastia surgery, also referred to as reduction mammoplasty or breast reduction, is a procedure in which extra breast tissue is excised from the breast.

Why do men elect to have gynaecomastia surgery?

Enlarged breast tissue on men can lead to significant body image issues that affect the self-esteem. As a result, a man may suffer from limited social and romantic interaction, as well as a generally inhibitive lifestyle. Men who undergo the surgery often desire to return to more form fitting clothing because they no longer feel the need to hide in their clothing.

What should I expect during the procedure?

During your consultation, A/Prof Damian Marucci will examine the area to ensure the procedure is right for you. Candidates should be of good health with well-toned skin that can adapt after the procedure.

Prior to the procedure patients will be put under a full general anaesthesic, so patients don’t have to worry about feeling a thing. Small incisions will be made on the upper abdomen. Excess breast glands will be removed by a combination of liposuction and excision. Dr Marucci avoids scars on the chest so that others will not be aware that any chest surgery has been performed.

Once complete, the small incisions will be closed with dissolvable sutures and waterproof dressings. Patients are able to shower from the following day. Patients are placed in a chest binder that is worn day and night under the clothes for a few weeks.

What is the recovery process like?

Some minor swelling and bruising is expected following the procedure. Elastic bandages (binder) will provide support as the site heals. Dr. Marucci will provide you with specific instructions following your procedure. Patients are advised to sleep on their back after surgery and they should restrict their arm movements during the first two weeks after surgery. Patients should rest for at least one week, if not two. After the first week, patients may return to work if necessary, although two weeks is advised. Strenuous activity including exercise should be avoided for the first four weeks.
