Eyelid Surgery In Sydney With A/Prof Damian Marucci

Aging is not always a graceful process. For some individuals, loose or sagging tissue around the eye can make them appear much older and tired than they actually are. This excess tissue cannot only affect their appearance but may even impact an individual’s vision if excessive sagging occurs. For people with loose skin around the eyes, eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, may be recommended.

What causes sagging around the eye?

As someone ages, the skin naturally loses collagen causing the skin to become more lax. Since the tissue around the eye is the thinnest on the body, this skin quickly shows the effects of aging. Muscles and the orbital septum, a thin tissue membrane, directly under the skin lose tension and may begin to sag. Additionally, fat deposits, which are necessary to cushion the eyeball, below the orbital septum will begin to shift towards the surface, creating a puffy bag-like appearance. This sagging can occur on both the upper and lower eyelids or separately.

Do I need an eyelid lift?

If you are over the age of 35 and experience loose skin around the eyes that doesn’t follow the natural contour of the brow bone or impairs vision, you may be an ideal candidate for eyelid surgery. Other characteristics include puffy bags under or above the eyelids typically caused by excess fatty deposits. This procedure may also reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes. If you believe you may need eyelid surgery, contact A/Prof Damian Marucci for a consultation.

How is eyelid surgery performed?

Eyelid surgery in Sydney can occur on the upper eyelid, lower eyelid, or both. Patients will be placed under local or general anesthesia before surgery. During upper eyelid surgery, an incision is made around the crease line where fatty deposits are removed. A small amount of skin will be removed to pull the skin taut and remove sagging. For a lower eyelid surgery a similar procedure may occur or A/Prof Damian Marucci may opt to enter through the conjunctiva tissue inside the eyelid to remove the fatty deposits. The type of lower eyelid surgery depends on the patient’s condition and what will work best for them. Sometimes other procedures such as a browlift or skin resurfacing may be recommended in conjunction with eyelid surgery to reduce the signs of aging.

What should I expect after surgery?

Most patients are able to return to normal activities after seven to ten days following surgery. Minor bruising and swelling may occur and can take a few of weeks to completely go away. Cool compresses can reduce the appearance of swelling and bruising if used within the first 48 hours. Light activity such as walking may be recommended to help speed the healing process. If self-dissolving stiches aren’t used, they will be removed after the first week.

Blepharoplasty is a common procedure with a short recovery time that could make a world of difference for some patients. This procedure is also used for Asian eyelid surgery to create a crease in the upper eyelid. If you have any questions please contact our Sydney office to speak with A/Prof Damian Marucci.
