What does it take to be a specialist plastic surgeon?

Specialist plastic surgeon Sydney

When considering any plastic surgery procedure, it’s important to choose your surgeon wisely. These procedures carry risks under any circumstances, but the risks are dramatically higher when performed by unqualified individuals. Unfortunately, there have been quite a few people in Australia who have been harmed by plastic surgery being performed by those who were not qualified.

Even many surgeons are not qualified to perform plastic surgery. These are specialised procedures, and even a surgeon needs additional training to perform them well. What does it take to be a specialist plastic surgeon? Why is it important to seek one out for your own procedure?

How do you know if a surgeon is fully qualified?

In Australia, there are regulations regarding who can refer to themselves as a “specialist plastic surgeon.” Unfortunately, any doctor may refer to themselves as a “cosmetic surgeon” or use similar misleading language. It’s important to verify that a doctor you’re considering actually has the training and skill to perform your procedure safely.

When you’re considering a plastic surgeon, you should check for a couple of indicators. A plastic surgeon must be approved as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. You know that a surgeon has this credential when you see the letters FRACS after their name. This indicates that the surgeon has training in a specialty; there are several recognised specialties, of which plastic surgery is one. For plastic surgery, the full credential is FRACS (Plast).

A specialist plastic surgeon should also be a member of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). This organisation verifies that a surgeon has the required training and experience to perform plastic surgery with high levels of safety and skill. You can check this database to see if a surgeon you’re considering is fully qualified.

How much training does a specialist plastic surgeon have?

In order to be fully qualified as a specialist plastic surgeon, the person must first qualify as a medical doctor. This generally requires completing an undergraduate university program, followed by four years of medical school. After this, an intern year must be completed at an accredited hospital. Finishing all of this allows the doctor to obtain general medical registration through the Medical Board of Australia.

At this point, a doctor can enter a medical specialty program. For plastic surgery, there is a period of two years of training in general surgery, followed by four years of specialty training in plastic surgery. The surgeon must also pass a series of exams, both written and clinical. This entitles him or her to the credential FRACS (Plast). In some cases, a surgeon may undertake additional training for another one to two years in a subspecialty of plastic surgery.

Getting great results from plastic surgery depends on the skill of your surgeon. You’re placing your safety as well as your appearance into their hands, so it’s important to ensure that your surgeon has the knowledge and skills necessary to perform your procedure well. Unfortunately, there are doctors out there performing cosmetic procedures that they aren’t fully qualified to perform. Make sure that you seek a fully qualified specialist plastic surgeon.
